Inflammation is the body’s normal response to infection, injury and insulting substances. It is mediated by the cells of the immune system (white blood cells) which release chemicals to raise or lower levels of inflammation.

Chronically elevated levels of inflammation have been linked with poor health, including but not limited to Depression: recent evidence has shown that chronic inflammation may have more to do with depression than your brain chemicals, Autoimmunity and allergies, Hormonal imbalance, from low thyroid function to uterine fibroids, infertility and menopausal symptoms, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) from Crohn’s to Ulcerative Colitis

Inflammation negatively affects digestion, energy levels and basic body functions. It should be a transient process that the body  uses to heal acute injury. But we can become stuck in chronic inflammation when there are long-lasting infections, dietary imbalances, yeast overgrowth or bacterial imbalance in the gut, a ‘leaky’ gut lining, chronic stress, or environmental toxicity.

Acidity vs. alkalinity in the body is a concept that largely overlaps with the process of inflammation. Certain foods are considered acid-forming and certain foods are alkaline-forming, meaning that they are broken down into, or create, products in the body that are acidic or alkaline.

Each component of the body functions at a certain pH. The stomach should be highly acidic in order to digest protein, with an ideal pH of 2. Meanwhile the blood must remain at the slightly alkaline pH of 7.3-7.4. Some body tissues have a fluctuating pH largely in response to nutritional intake, stress levels and inflammation, and hormonal and microbial influences.

Your urine’s pH should vary throughout the day and should be most acidic during the night and on waking in the morning, after a night of cellular detoxification and metabolizing the day’s foods. If the urine pH is constantly acidic or varies too little, this is a sign of nutritional imbalance, chronic inflammation, or hormonal or metabolic disharmony.

Salivary pH is also important and reflects levels of inflammation in the mouth and systemic tissues. Acidic saliva contributes to enamel and bone loss, cavities, gum disease and tooth decay. An excess of acid-forming foods in the diet contributes to depletion of minerals from the bones and teeth. The blood must remain at its ideal pH, so in acidic conditions it will draw from the mineral reserves in the bones to neutralize the pH, weakening the bones.

To reduce chronic inflammation:

Mental-emotional health: Practice self-care in the form of regular rest and relaxation, away from screens and devices. Body movement, music, true social connection and time in nature may all be helpful if there is any challenge with this.

Physical health: Notice if you are tense or clenching anywhere in your body, and address that with stretching, postural improvement, self-massage or osteopathic treatment. In some cases, an orthotic may be needed, whether dental, footwear, or other tools to maintain alignment and prevent tension from building.

Nutrition: Eat a diet consisting of at least 70% anti-inflammatory or alkaline forming foods.

Digestion: Care for your digestive system. Your gastrointestinal tract is the foundation for your whole body health. It is important to address any chronic bloating, heartburn, constipation or irritable bowel symptoms, either on your own or with the expert guidance of a naturopathic doctor.
