To continue with our “Foods To Avoid” series, we look at none other than Hard Candies.

We are talking about suckers, lollipops, candy canes, and any variety hard, processed, colourful sugar filled candies.

Sucking these candies exposes your mouth to harsh sugars for longer periods of time.

Chewing on them can break or crack teeth, fillings, and sealants. Eating too many and the constant exposure to sugar will harm your teeth.

Hard candies also put your teeth at risk because in addition to being full of sugar, they can also trigger a dental emergency such as a broken or chipped tooth.

If you do have the occasional candy here and there, make sure to eat it quickly, as sucking on it over time is worst and the sugars will linger on your teeth. Try not to crunch down too hard, and rinse your mouth with a glass of water afterwards!

The holiday season is a very difficult time, especially with candy canes and other festive treats. Do your mouth and your health and favor and opt for healthier, more satisfying goodies such as nuts, fruit and good quality vegan chocolate.

Stay tuned for more foods to avoid and how in doing so you can help maintain the health and wellness of your teeth, gums and overall well being.
